Three core rules

The short version

Hot room: no

Dogs do not enter a heated sauna. Temperatures of 70 °C and above cause heat stroke within minutes. There is no breed exception to this rule.

Cool side room: usually fine

A changing room, terrace, or porch under 25 °C with water available works for most dogs while humans are in the sauna. The dog must be free to walk away.

After sauna: cool down, leash up

Humans cooling off in the lake or yard often invite the dog along. Watch for muddy paws back inside, ticks at the mökki, and slippery floors after wet feet.

Heat stroke is an emergency

If the dog gets overheated by accident, move to shade, wet paws and belly with cool water (not ice), and call a vet. Do not ignore heavy panting that does not stop in five minutes.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Can I bring my dog into a Finnish sauna?
No. Sauna temperatures (typically 70-100 °C) are dangerous for dogs. They cannot regulate body temperature the way humans do and risk fatal heat stroke within minutes. Dogs stay out of the hot sauna room, full stop.
What about a cold or warm anteroom?
A cool changing room or porch is usually fine if it stays under 25 °C and the dog has water and the freedom to leave. Many Finnish families let the dog rest in the cool side room while humans sauna.
What about a "cold sauna" or "savusauna" not yet heated?
A traditional smoke sauna or a wood sauna before heating is fine for the dog to investigate. As soon as the stove is lit and the room warms, the dog should be moved to a cool space with water.
What are signs of heat stroke in a dog?
Heavy panting, bright red gums, drooling, weakness, vomiting, collapse. Heat stroke is a vet emergency. Move the dog to shade, wet the paws and belly with cool (not ice cold) water, and call a vet immediately.
What should I tell a Petme sitter about my mökki and sauna routine?
List clearly: when the sauna is heated, where the dog goes during that time, and where the water bowls live. Most cottage sitters know the routine but a one-line note in the booking removes any ambiguity.
Can puppies handle warmer rooms than adults?
Less. Puppies have weaker temperature regulation. Keep puppies in a fully cool room well away from the sauna. The same applies to senior dogs, brachycephalic breeds (Pugs, Bulldogs), and dogs on medication.
