Why August is the hardest month to find a Greek pet sitter
Δεκαπενταύγουστος (August 15) is the single biggest travel spike in Greece. Most Athenians and Thessalonians leave their cities the week before, the week of, or both. Two-thirds of the country effectively closes. Your regular sitter is also gone. Book early.
Your three options
Take the pet with you (ferry rules apply, see the island guide). Drop-in visits at your home (best for cats and senior dogs). Boarding with a sitter who stays in town (best for dogs who like company). The Petme app shows availability for all three.
Pricing during the August peak
Athens boarding: €18-35 per night. Thessaloniki boarding: €15-30 per night. Islands (Mykonos, Santorini, Paros, Corfu, Naxos): €25-50 per night. Sitters who stay through the peak fill their calendars by mid-July.
Booking timeline
June: open dates in the Petme app and message a couple of sitters for a meet and greet. Mid-July: confirm your booking. End of July: send the key handover plan and pet routine notes. Wait until August to book and you will find limited availability.
