Dog beaches and dog-friendly coast in Slovenia

Strunjan. Žusterna. Debeli Rtič. The 46 km of coast that does welcome dogs.

Slovenia has a short coastline but takes its dog beaches seriously. This is the practical map: which beaches allow dogs in summer, which only open out of season, where the dog-friendly cafes are, and the Parenzana coastal path that runs all the way from Strunjan to the Italian border.

The three main dog beaches

Žusterna (Koper–Izola)

Pebble beach with a dedicated dog area. Parking right above the beach. Year-round access. Easy walk from central Koper.

Strunjan dog beach

At the northern edge of the Strunjan landscape park. Pebble and rock, clear water, less crowded than Žusterna in peak summer.

Debeli Rtič (Ankaran)

Quieter alternative on the headland north of Ankaran. Some shade, low gradient into the water, suited to older dogs.

Parenzana coastal path

The 21 km former-railway path from Strunjan through Izola toward Koper. Pine shade, sea views, fully dog-friendly on a lead.

In summer

Where dogs are restricted between June and September

Public bathing beaches at Koper, Izola, Portorož, and most of Ankaran ban dogs from mid-June to mid-September. Outside that window the same beaches are open. In Piran old town and on the seafront paths, dogs on a lead are welcome year-round.

If you visit in peak summer with a dog, plan around Žusterna, Strunjan, and Debeli Rtič, and use the Parenzana for longer dog walks away from the sand bans.

Are dogs allowed on regular Slovenian beaches?

Most public bathing beaches in summer (Koper, Izola, Portorož) ban dogs between mid-June and mid-September. Outside that window, dogs are generally welcome on a lead. Designated dog beaches stay open year-round.

Where are the official dog beaches in Slovenia?

The main dog beaches are at Žusterna (between Koper and Izola), Debeli Rtič near Ankaran, and a dedicated dog area at Strunjan. All have parking nearby and stay accessible through the summer.

Can dogs swim at Strunjan?

Yes, in the designated dog area at the northern end of Strunjan. The rest of the Strunjan landscape park welcomes dogs on a lead, including the famous cliff path.

What about Portorož and Piran?

Portorož bathing area excludes dogs in summer. Piran old town and the seafront paths are dog-friendly year-round. The Sečovlje salt pans nature reserve allows dogs on a lead.

Is the Parenzana coastal cycling path dog-friendly?

Yes. The Parenzana from Strunjan through Izola toward Koper runs through pine forest along the coast, fully open to dogs on a lead, with sea views and shade.
