Pet insurance in Canada: a buyer's guide

Trupanion, Petsecure, OVMA, and the rest. What insurance does, what it doesn't, and how Petme's vet protection fits.

Pet insurance in Canada is a smaller industry than in the US or UK and the brands you’ll see most often are Trupanion, Petsecure, Pets Plus Us, and Sonnet. This is a plain-language overview to help you understand the basics and where Petme’s built-in CAD 20,000 vet protection fits. Not financial advice; compare actual policy documents before buying.

What insurance actually covers

The standard Canadian policy structure

Most Canadian pet insurance policies cover accident and illness on a reimbursement basis. You pay the vet, submit a claim with the invoice, and the insurer reimburses a percentage of eligible costs after a deductible. Annual limits and exclusions vary widely.

Common exclusions: pre-existing conditions, routine care (vaccines, dental cleaning, spay/neuter), breeding-related costs, behavioural training. Wellness add-ons exist for some routine costs but they often aren’t worth it on the math.

The main Canadian players

Brands you'll see most often

Trupanion

Direct vet payment in many clinics (no out-of-pocket waiting for reimbursement). One annual deductible per condition (not per year). Higher monthly cost but stronger structure for chronic illness.

Petsecure

One of Canada’s longest-established providers. Tiered plans with different deductibles and reimbursement percentages. Owned by Pethealth.

Pets Plus Us

CIBC partner. Three tier levels, optional wellness add-on. Solid mid-market option.

Sonnet

Online-first, simpler structure. Newer entrant with growing presence.

OVMA Pet Health Insurance

Backed by the Ontario Veterinary Medical Association. Underwritten by Western Financial Group.

How Petme vet protection fits

Booking-level coverage, not pet-level

Petme’s CAD 20,000 vet protection is included automatically on every booking, with no deductible and no upcharge. It’s booking-level coverage: it applies if something happens to your pet during a booking with a Petme sitter. Outside a booking, it doesn’t apply.

For year-round coverage of accident and illness, a Canadian pet insurance policy is the right tool. Petme’s booking-level protection complements that policy: it covers the specific window when your pet is in someone else’s care, with no claim against your insurance deductible.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Should I buy pet insurance?
For young pets with no pre-existing conditions, the math often works out across a lifetime. For older pets with existing conditions, those conditions are typically excluded, which limits the value. Compare a real quote against typical annual vet costs for your breed.
Does Petme's vet protection replace my pet insurance?
No. Petme's protection covers what happens during a booking with a Petme sitter. Year-round insurance covers what happens at home or in your own care. Most owners benefit from both for the windows where each applies.
Can sitters file claims with Petme's vet protection?
Yes. If your pet needs a vet during a booking, the sitter (or you) can open a claim from inside the Petme app. The CAD 20,000 limit and no deductible apply at any licensed Canadian vet clinic.
