Local know-how pays off in Nowra
Australia runs its seasons upside down, so the hardest walking weather in Nowra lands at Christmas and the quiet cool months are June to August. Heat illness in dogs peaks across December and January, and it is the overnight minimum rather than the daytime maximum that decides whether a dog has cooled down by morning. Walkers who move to early morning and after sunset, press the back of a hand to the footpath for five seconds before stepping a dog onto it, and carry water keep their bookings through summer. Anywhere on the eastern seaboard add a daily tick search from spring, and everywhere keep dogs on lead and out of long grass once snakes are on the move.
When demand peaks
The summer school break is the big one: roughly six weeks from mid-December to late January, taking in Christmas, New Year and Australia Day, when owners travel and overnight work runs short first. Easter with the April holidays is the second wave, and the June and July break is a third, because southern owners drive north to Queensland and the Territory rather than staying home for the winter. Term dates are set state by state and stagger by a week or two, which spreads the peak instead of stacking it on one weekend. Boarding and house sitting lead the holiday blocks, walking and drop-in visits carry the working weeks between them, and daycare follows the office week rather than the holidays.
