The official dog beaches on Malta island

The Commissioner for Animal Welfare maintains an official list of dog-friendly beaches. Twelve are on Malta island; four more are on Gozo. The list is reviewed periodically, so always check the latest signage on-site before swimming.

Notable Malta-island dog beaches include the stretches around Bahar ic-Caghaq, Riviera (north-west of Mellieha), parts of St Thomas Bay (Marsaskala), Imgiebah Bay (north Malta), Fomm ir-Rih, and small designated areas along the Northern coast. Some are sandy, some rocky; access varies from easy (parking nearby) to a 20-30 minute walk down a cliff path.

Off-season vs bathing season

The bathing season runs roughly 1 May to 31 October, during which most non-designated beaches restrict dogs. Outside the bathing season, the rules relax: most quiet bays accept dogs in practice, though formal restrictions can still apply.

The official dog-friendly beaches accept dogs year-round, which is why they're the safe choice in July and August when the rest of the coast is off-limits.

Practical tips for Malta beach trips

Bring shade. Most Maltese beaches have minimal natural shade. A small UV-resistant umbrella keeps the dog comfortable through a midday stretch.

Rinse with fresh water after swimming. Maltese sea salt and limestone dust together can irritate paws and skin if not rinsed off.

Watch for sea urchins on rocky entry points. Mellieħa Bay (sandy) and St Thomas Bay (mixed) are safer for first-time swimmers than the rocky stretches at Qui-Si-Sana or the Sliema coast.

Frequently asked

FAQs

Which Maltese beaches are dog-friendly year-round?
There are 12 official dog-friendly beaches on Malta island (plus 4 on Gozo) listed by the Commissioner for Animal Welfare. They accept dogs year-round including during the May-October bathing season.
Can I take my dog to Mellieħa Bay?
During the bathing season (May to October), the main Mellieħa Bay beach restricts dogs. Outside the bathing season, parts of the bay become more accessible. Check the on-site signage for the current rules.
Are sandy beaches better than rocky ones for dogs?
Sandy beaches (Mellieħa, Golden Bay outside bathing season, the official dog beaches) are easier for first-time swimmers and gentler on paws. Rocky shores are harder to enter and can have sea urchins.
Do I need to rinse my dog after a Maltese sea swim?
Yes. Maltese sea salt is concentrated and limestone dust gets into paws. A quick fresh-water rinse after every swim prevents skin and paw irritation.
What about Gozo dog beaches?
Gozo has 4 official dog-friendly beaches. This guide focuses on Malta island in 2026; a dedicated Gozo guide is planned.
