Caring for your dog in McKinney
North Texas heat, storms, and Collin County tips
Intense summer heat
McKinney summers regularly exceed 100°F. Walk dogs in early morning or after sunset, carry water on all outings, and watch for hot pavement burning paw pads from May through September.
Severe storm season
North Texas and Collin County sit in prime tornado and severe thunderstorm territory. Have an indoor shelter plan for your dog during spring and fall storm systems.
Trail surface awareness
Erwin Park's mountain biking trails can have exposed roots and loose rock. Keep dogs on leash on shared-use trail sections for safety.
Hydration on Collin County trails
North Texas humidity in summer makes dehydration a real risk. Carry extra water and a portable bowl on any outing longer than 20 minutes.
