The law

The legal framework

Dog Control Act 1996

The Dog Control Act 1996 requires every dog over three months old to be registered with the local council and microchipped, with limited working-farm-dog exemptions.

Animal Welfare Act 1999

The Animal Welfare Act 1999 plus the MPI Code of Welfare: Dogs set the minimum care standards Auckland sitters and owners must meet.

National Dog Database

Microchip numbers are logged on the National Dog Database (NDD) by your vet or council. The number lives with the dog, not the owner, so update contact details when you move.

Step by step

How to register your dog in Auckland

1. Register by three months

You must register your dog with Auckland Council before it turns three months old. The registration year runs 1 July to 30 June; renewals come out from May.

2. Microchip first

Microchipping is required at the time of first registration (with working-farm exemption). Your vet implants the chip and logs it on the National Dog Database.

3. Apply online

Apply at aucklandcouncil.govt.nz under Pets > Dogs > Register or update. You will need photo ID, microchip number, and a few dog details.

4. Display the tag

Auckland Council posts the new tag to you. Attach it to the dog’s collar. Dogs must wear the tag when off the owner’s property.
