About dog walking in Auckland
Auckland is the biggest pet-sitting market in New Zealand by a wide margin. Bookings cluster around the central isthmus (Ponsonby, Grey Lynn, Mt Eden) and the Eastern Bays (Mission Bay, St Heliers), where long work commutes and apartment living drive demand for weekday walks and daycare.
December through late January is the Christmas and summer peak. Auckland owners book 6-8 weeks ahead. The other reliable spike is around Easter and the late-September school holidays.
Auckland is four former cities under one council, and for a dog walker that geography is the whole job. The central isthmus, the North Shore over the Harbour Bridge, Waitakere in the west and Manukau in the south each behave like their own market, and almost nobody works more than one of them in a day.
On the isthmus, Ponsonby, Grey Lynn, Mt Eden and Remuera pair apartments and small sections with long commutes, which is what makes a midday walk worth paying for. Auckland Central itself is the densest patch of all and the one owners most often search for by name.
North of the bridge, Takapuna, Devonport, Milford and Albany are quieter and greener, and the bridge is the reason a Shore walker stays on the Shore: crossing it at the wrong hour costs more time than the walk. The same is true of the southern and western motorways.
West Auckland, around Henderson, Te Atatu and Titirangi, has the bush tracks and the bigger sections, so walks there run longer and groups are easier. South and east, Manukau, Botany, Howick and Pakuranga have the newer subdivisions and the fenced yards that suit bigger dogs.
