Santa Marija fireworks and pet anxiety in Malta

Malta's feast season puts most pet households on alert for six weeks. Santa Marija on 15 August is the peak, but display nights are scattered across July, August and September. Here is what works for Maltese owners with anxious dogs and cats.

The Maltese fireworks calendar

Malta runs the densest village-feast schedule in Europe. From late June to mid-September almost every parish puts on a multi-day feast, and most include nightly aerial fireworks plus ground-level petards. Santa Marija on 15 August is the absolute peak: seven parishes celebrate the same feast on the same day, with simultaneous displays in Mqabba, Lija, Mosta, Gudja, Attard, Qrendi and Ghaxaq.

Mqabba and Lija are legendary for their aerial competitions, with displays running past midnight. Sliema, St Julian's and the inner harbour get reflected sound from the parishes inland; even households a few towns away from a feast can hear sustained heavy fireworks for hours.

What to set up before display nights

Move the pet to the most-insulated room (smallest windows, furthest from the exterior wall facing the display direction). Close blinds and curtains, leave a familiar background sound on (TV, music, an audiobook on low volume), and put out an extra litter box or water bowl in case the pet doesn't want to leave the room for hours.

For dogs that already react badly: ask your vet about anti-anxiety options BEFORE the feast peak, not the day of. Some require dosing 30-60 minutes before the first display. Pheromone diffusers (Adaptil for dogs, Feliway for cats) help if started 1-2 weeks ahead.

For severe anxiety: book a Petme house sitter for the festa week instead of leaving the pet alone. House sitting keeps the pet in their familiar environment with a calm human present during display nights. Booking 4-6 weeks ahead is recommended for the Santa Marija peak.

What to avoid

Do not walk an anxious dog after sundown during peak festa weeks. The risk is a sudden display starting mid-walk, panicking the dog, and them slipping the lead.

Do not crate a dog that isn't already crate-trained. Crating an anxious dog cold during a stressful event escalates the panic rather than calming it.

Do not punish anxious behaviour. The behaviour is fear, not disobedience. Soothing words, calm energy, and physical proximity work better than corrections.

Frequently asked

FAQs

When is Santa Marija and which parishes celebrate?
Santa Marija (Assumption of Mary) is fixed at 15 August. Seven Maltese parishes celebrate it simultaneously: Mqabba, Lija, Mosta, Gudja, Attard, Qrendi and Ghaxaq, each with its own multi-day festa and aerial fireworks.
Is Sliema affected even though it doesn't have a festa on 15 August?
Yes. Malta is small enough that fireworks from neighbouring parishes carry clearly across the inner harbour. Sliema, St Julian's, Gzira and Valletta hear sustained heavy fireworks during the Santa Marija peak.
How early should I book a house sitter for the festa week?
For the Santa Marija peak (mid-August), book 4-6 weeks ahead. Demand is high and the strongest sitter profiles fill up fast.
Are there medications I should ask my vet about?
Talk to your vet about anti-anxiety options like trazodone or sileo. Do not self-prescribe. Some medications need dosing 30-60 minutes before the first display; some require 1-2 weeks of build-up.
Can I take my dog out at all during festa weeks?
Yes, but shift walks to early morning (before 9am) and avoid any walking after sundown. Most display nights start around 9-10pm and continue late.
