How long can a dog be left alone?
There is no single safe number. A 3-month-old puppy may need to go out after about 4 hours. A healthy adult can manage a workday. Overnight needs a person in the house.
The American Veterinary Medical Association does not publish an hour limit. The right window depends on age, health, and whether the dog panics when you leave.
Four windows, and the one number a vet body has published.
Puppy under 6 months
A 3-month-old may need to eliminate after about 4 hours. That figure comes from veterinary journal literature cited by the AVMA, and it is about the bladder, not about boredom. A puppy left longer than that soils the house and learns the wrong habit.
Healthy adult
Many adults manage a workday once they have been built up to it: a break before you leave, water down, a break when you get home. If the dog destroys the door frame or will not settle on camera, the workday is too long and a midday drop-in is the fix.
Senior, or any dog on medication
Twice a day is the floor. A dog on insulin, seizure medication or pain relief cannot wait until evening for a dose that was due at noon. Book the visits around the dose, not around your shift.
Overnight and 24 hours
Neither is a safe window for any dog. Book a sitter who stays, or two drop-ins at minimum. A camera, an automatic feeder and a dog door do not replace a person checking the dog.
