Kennel or home: what the money buys
The two options can cost a similar amount over a week. What differs is the night itself.| Boarding kennel | Home boarding | |
|---|---|---|
| Where your dog sleeps | Its own kennel unit, which the RSPCA expects unless you agree it can share with your other dog | In the sitter's home; ask which room |
| Company | Staff on site, other guest dogs in nearby units | One household; ask about resident or other guest dogs |
| Exercise | The RSPCA expects at least one walk a day outside the kennel | Set by the sitter; ask how many walks and where |
| How the price is quoted | Set by each kennel, often per dog per day, sometimes by size | Each sitter's nightly rate, shown on their profile before you book |
Small dogs and kennel prices
Some Glasgow kennels price by the size of the dog and some charge one rate per dog. If you have a small dog, ask whether the rate reflects that, and whether a second dog from your household shares a unit at a lower rate. With a home boarder, ask whether there are larger dogs in the house that your dog would share space with. A low kennel price for a small dog is only a saving if the rest of the night is what you want. When Glasgow goes on holiday
Scottish schools break up earlier than English ones. In 2026 Glasgow City Council's term dates had schools closing on 25 June, with pupils back on 12 August. If you are planning a family week away, the window is late June to early August, and the PDSA warns that good boarding places often get fully booked at busy holiday times like summer. Message sitters as soon as your flights are booked, and ask two or three, not one.A summer week, priced
You go away for seven nights in July and book a home boarder at the £37 midpoint.- 7 nights at £37 comes to £259.
- At £28 a night the week is £196, and at £45 it is £315.
- Owners pay a 0% booking fee on Petme, so £259 is the whole bill.
- Cashback of £7.77 is credited after the completed booking.
- Typical platforms add a booking fee of about £28.49 on the same week.
Choosing between them
A confident dog that is used to other dogs may do well in a kennel with a set routine. A nervous or older dog may settle better in a quiet home. Either way, visit first: the PDSA advises seeing the premises in person rather than relying on a website. Ask where the walks go, too. A sitter in Partick or Hillhead may use Kelvingrove Park, one nearer the centre Glasgow Green. Our guide to in-home sitting vs boarding covers the trade-offs.How boarding is licensed in Scotland
The rules in Scotland are not England's. Dog boarding here is still licensed by the local council under the Animal Boarding Establishments Act 1963, so in the city that means Glasgow City Council. The England star-rating system does not apply, so ask a Glasgow boarder to show you their council licence instead. Our home boarding licence guide covers the wider UK picture. Petme also has the Protection Plan for eligible vet costs.Glasgow dog boarding: FAQ
