A kennel night and a home night, side by side
| Question | At a kennel | With a home boarder |
|---|---|---|
| Bed for the night? | A kennel unit of its own (the RSPCA standard), shared only with your other dog if you agree | A spot in the sitter's house, so ask to see it |
| Company during the day? | Kennel staff, with other guests in the next units | The sitter's household, plus any dogs they live with |
| Time outdoors? | One walk a day outside the unit as the RSPCA minimum | Whatever the sitter offers, so get the number and length |
| How is it priced? | By the kennel, often per dog per day | By the sitter, per night, on their Petme profile |
| Suits which dog? | One that is relaxed around other dogs and likes routine | One that is anxious, elderly or boarding for the first time |
Getting a kennel quote you can compare
Phone two or three licensed kennels in the Swansea area and ask each for the same things:- The total for your exact dates, not a nightly figure.
- Whether drop-off and collection days are charged as full days.
- How many walks are included, and whether medication costs extra.
- The deposit, the cancellation terms and any bank holiday supplement.
A week away, priced
Say you go away for seven nights and book a home boarder at the £29 midpoint.- 7 nights at £29 comes to £203.
- At £22 a night the week is £154, and at £36 it is £252.
- Owners pay a 0% booking fee on Petme, so £203 is the whole bill.
- Cashback of £6.09 is credited after the completed booking.
- Typical platforms add a booking fee of about £22.33 on the same week.
Walks: ask where, not just how many
Swansea is an easy place to give a boarded dog a good day out. The urban area runs along Swansea Bay to Mumbles, and the Gower Peninsula next door was the first area in the UK to be named an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, according to the city's Wikipedia entry. Closer in there is Singleton Park and the Clyne Valley Country Park. A sitter in Sketty, Uplands, Killay or Morriston will have their own regular route, so ask what a normal day looks like for your dog, and whether beach walks are part of it. Visit before you book, whichever you choose. The PDSA advises seeing boarding premises in person rather than relying on a website, and not leaving vaccinations, especially kennel cough, to the last minute. Our guide to in-home sitting vs boarding goes through the trade-offs.How boarding is licensed in Wales
Wales does not use England's licensing regulations. Dog boarding here is licensed by the local council under the Animal Boarding Establishments Act 1963, so in the city that means Swansea Council. The English five-star rating does not apply, so ask any kennel or home boarder to show you their council licence. Our home boarding licence guide covers the wider UK rules.
