Cottage country pet sitting

Friday-to-Sunday cottage trips, July to September. House sitting and drop-ins for the pets you leave at home.

For many urban Canadian pet owners, summer is a string of Friday-to-Sunday cottage trips. Not every pet is suited to the cottage (cats especially), and many owners leave them in the city with a sitter. This is the practical cottage-weekend playbook Petme sitters and owners use.

The pattern

How cottage weekends work for city pets

Most cottage owners leave Friday afternoon and return Sunday evening. That makes house sitting from Friday night through Sunday afternoon (2-3 nights) the most common Petme booking shape in Toronto, Ottawa, and Montreal during summer.

Cats often prefer to stay home with twice-daily drop-in visits over a 2-3 night cottage trip. Dogs can do either: house sitting at home, or boarding at a sitter’s place. Discuss your pet’s temperament with sitters at the meet and greet.

Booking ahead

Summer fills up early

July and August Petme bookings in major Canadian metros fill up in May and June. Repeat owners book their preferred sitter weeks ahead; first-time owners often have to choose between two or three sitters with availability on a specific weekend.

If you cottage every other weekend, a recurring booking with the same sitter is the easiest path. Most sitters offer a small discount for recurring bookings.

What to leave for the sitter

Cottage-weekend handoff checklist

Vet contact and emergency clinic

Local vet name and number, plus the nearest 24-hour emergency clinic. Petme’s CAD 20,000 vet protection covers any licensed Canadian vet during the booking.

Feeding schedule

Type of food, portion size, time of day. Write it down or text it; don’t rely on verbal-only instructions.

Medication if any

Bottle label clearly visible, dosing schedule, demonstration at the meet and greet if it’s a tricky one.

Cottage contact number

A number where you can be reached if cell service is patchy at the cottage. Most sitters appreciate a backup contact too.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Can I bring my dog to the cottage but have a sitter for the cat?
Yes, this is one of the most common Petme summer setups. Drop-in visits for the cat are usually the easiest fit; two visits per day across a 3-night cottage trip is the standard pattern.
My cottage is in the Muskokas. Can I book a sitter there for a small group trip?
Petme’s primary sitter coverage is in major Canadian metros. Cottage-area sitters exist but are sparser; book ahead.
What if my flight back is delayed?
Communicate with your sitter in the in-app chat. Most sitters can accommodate a few extra hours; longer extensions become a new booking that flows through the same chat.
