Frequently asked questions
Cat sitter questions in Montreal
Does a Montreal winter change how a sitter visits Lachine?
It changes what gets checked. Forced-air heating dries indoor air out over the winter, so water intake matters more and a sitter will top up and reposition bowls rather than just refill them. Ice storms and the outages that follow are the other winter risk, so agree in advance who to call if the heat goes out while you are away from Lachine.
Why home visits in Lachine instead of boarding?
Cats bond to territory rather than to people the way dogs do, so the move itself is the stressful part, not the time alone. That is why the cat service across Montreal is the drop-in visit: your cat stays in its own home in Lachine and only the person changes. It also avoids driving a carrier across town in the middle of a Canadian winter.
How much does a cat sitter cost in Montreal?
Drop-in cat visits in Montreal typically cost $20 to $32 CAD per visit. The Plateau, Mile End, and Westmount sit at the higher end; the East End, Verdun, and Laval are a little lower. Overnight in-home sitting runs $50 to $80 CAD per night. Sitters set their own rates and you see the total before booking.
Do Montreal cat sitters speak French?
Many do. Montreal sitters list their languages on their profile; filter for French if you want to handle the booking in French from chat through to the meet and greet. The Petme platform is available in French, and sitter notes and photo captions can be in French throughout the booking.
My third-floor walk-up has tight stairs. Will that be a problem?
No. Montreal walk-up sitters are used to triplex and quadplex stairs. Make sure your key works smoothly from the outer door to the apartment door, and confirm with the sitter at the meet and greet which door codes or buzzers are in use. Mention the floor number in the booking notes.
Can I find a sitter for a Laurentians or Eastern Townships cottage weekend?
Most Montreal owners book the sitter to visit the Montreal home while the cat stays in familiar territory. A handful of sitters travel to the Laurentians or Townships for in-home cat care during longer holidays; mention the location and dates in your booking request.
My cat is on medication. Can the sitter handle it?
Yes if the sitter is medication-experienced. Filter for 'medication experienced' and message a few sitters in chat. Pills, oral drops, ear drops, and subcutaneous fluids for renal cats are routine. Insulin injections are handled by sitters who have done it before; share the brand and dose at the meet and greet.
How do I handle the keys on a Plateau flat with a buzzer?
Hand the sitter the keys at the meet and greet. If your building has a buzzer code, write it on the booking notes. Many Plateau buildings have an outer door, an inner door, and a flat door; label each key clearly. Most owners use a key with a colour ring per door.
My cat hides under the couch. Will the sitter find them?
Yes. Montreal sitters are used to shy cats. The sitter still refills food and water, scoops the litter, looks for the cat without forcing interaction, and reports what they observed. Most shy cats start coming out by the third or fourth visit once the sitter is part of the routine.
Is the CAD 32,000 Protection Plan valid at Quebec clinics?
Yes. Every Petme booking in Montreal includes up to CAD 32,000 in emergency Protection Plan at any licensed Quebec vet clinic during the sitter's care window. No deductible, no enrollment, no extra fee. Coverage runs from the first visit to the last visit of the booking.
