Frequently asked questions
Cat sitter questions in Ottawa
How many visits a day does a cat in New Edinburgh need?
One visit a day covers a healthy adult cat: food, fresh water, litter, and some company. Two makes sense for kittens, seniors, cats on medication, or a multi-cat household. Sitters in New Edinburgh agree the timing with you before the first visit, and most send a photo at the end of each one so you can see how Ottawa looks from your cat's side of it.
My cat hides from strangers in New Edinburgh. Is that a problem?
It is the most common reaction and it does not affect the visit. An experienced sitter in New Edinburgh will not force contact: food and litter get handled, the cat comes out on its own schedule, and most appear by the second or third visit. Until then the photos and the litter box tell you what you need to know, which is that your cat is eating and using it while you are out of Ottawa.
How much does a cat sitter cost in Ottawa?
Drop-in cat visits in Ottawa typically cost $20 to $30 CAD per visit. The Glebe, Westboro, and ByWard sit at the higher end; Kanata, Barrhaven, and Orleans are a little lower. Overnight in-home sitting runs $50 to $80 CAD per night. Sitters set their own rate and you see the total before booking.
I work in government and travel often. How does Petme handle short-notice trips?
Most Ottawa sitters handle short-notice bookings well, especially if you have already done a meet and greet with one or two sitters. Save them as favourites, message in chat the moment travel is confirmed, and they can usually start within a day or two. Same-day bookings work outside peak holidays.
Do Ottawa cat sitters cover Kanata, Barrhaven, and Orleans?
Yes. Sitters set their own coverage areas. Many cover their own suburb; some downtown sitters cover the whole inner city. Use the Ottawa filter and check each sitter's coverage map. Kanata North, Barrhaven Central, and Orleans South are all well represented.
My cat is on insulin twice daily. Can the sitter handle injections?
Yes if the sitter is experienced. Filter for 'medication experienced' and message a few sitters in chat. Show the brand of insulin, the dose, and the timing. Most Ottawa sitters who handle insulin will ask for a brief demo at the meet and greet so they are comfortable on day one.
How do I keep the thermostat right during a winter trip?
Set the thermostat at 19 to 21 degrees C for the duration of the booking. Do not let it drop below 18 in winter; cats can get uncomfortable and pipes near outside walls can freeze. Ask the sitter to confirm the thermostat reading on the first visit and adjust if needed.
Can I book a sitter for a cottage weekend in the Gatineau Hills?
Most Ottawa owners book the sitter to visit the Ottawa home. A few sitters travel to Gatineau Hills cottages for in-home cat care; mention the location and dates in your booking request. For weekend trips, drop-ins to the Ottawa home are usually easier and cheaper.
My cat is shy with strangers. How long until they trust the sitter?
Most shy cats start showing up by the third or fourth visit. The sitter still refills food and water, scoops litter, looks for the cat without forcing interaction, and reports what they observed. A good meet and greet helps; let the cat smell the sitter's hand without pressure to engage.
Is the CAD 32,000 Protection Plan automatic for Ottawa bookings?
Yes. Every Petme booking in Ottawa includes up to CAD 32,000 in emergency Protection Plan at any licensed Ontario vet clinic during the sitter's care window. No deductible, no enrollment, no extra fee. Coverage runs from the first visit to the last visit.
