I know this might stir up some strong opinions, but hear me out—
Desensitizing a dog by slapping or patting them harshly to mimic how a child might touch them isn’t training. It’s teaching them to suppress discomfort.
And suppression isn’t safety—it’s a ticking clock.
Dogs shouldn’t be forced to “get used to” being handled in ways that feel scary or unpredictable. Instead, we should be teaching children how to respect animals and approach with care.
If a child isn’t old enough to follow simple boundaries like “be gentle” or “give the dog space,” they shouldn’t be petting dogs—period.
You wouldn’t want someone walking up and slapping your arm to prepare you for kids either, right?
Let’s start thinking about how our dogs feel—because they deserve to feel safe, too.
