Step one: pick the kind of care
Every sitter sets their own rate, so these are the bands you are choosing inside. The real number is on each profile, so there are no surprises at checkout.
| Service | Louisville rate | Unit | Derby week fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Boarding (dog stays at the sitter's home) | $35 - $62 | per night | You are away, or your house is full of guests |
| House sitting (sitter stays at yours) | $50 - $100 | per night, national band | Your dog does better at home |
| Dog walking | $14 - $23 | per hour | You are at the track all day but home at night |
| Drop-in visit | $15 - $25 | per visit, national band | Short breaks on a long race day |
If you only need cover for Oaks and Derby days, two drop-ins a day for the two days cost $60 to $100. For anything overnight, it is boarding or a house sitter. The national dog sitting cost guide explains how to choose.
Step two: choose a part of town
Cherokee Triangle sitters list at the top, $50 to $62 a night, close to Cherokee Park. The Highlands and NuLu run $48 to $60, and the Highlands has the deepest sitter pool in the city. Crescent Hill sits at $45 to $58, St. Matthews at $42 to $55 near Seneca Park, Germantown at $40 to $52, Old Louisville at $38 to $50 and Middletown at $35 to $48.
On Derby week, traffic around Churchill Downs is the thing to plan around. A sitter in the Highlands, Crescent Hill or St. Matthews, away from the track, makes drop-off and pick-up easier. For a big dog, St. Matthews and Middletown tend to have more yards.
Step three: price the week
Four nights, Thursday to Monday, at the bottom, middle and top of the band. The middle row uses $48 a night, the Louisville midpoint in Petme's own rate example for the Highlands.
| Nightly rate | Sitter total (4 nights) | Typical platform fee, 11% to 15% | Total on a typical platform | Total on Petme |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| $35 | $140 | $15.40 - $21.00 | $155.40 - $161.00 | $140 |
| $48 | $192 | $21.12 - $28.80 | $213.12 - $220.80 | $192 |
| $62 | $248 | $27.28 - $37.20 | $275.28 - $285.20 | $248 |
A house sitter for the same four nights costs $200 to $400 on the national band, and a typical platform's fee would add $22 to $60. On Petme the owner booking fee is 0%, so the sitter's total is the bill, and Petme credits cashback after a completed booking.
Step four: book early
Derby week is the highest-demand stretch of the Louisville year for boarding, when the city empties out for days at a time. Message sitters in February or March. The cost of leaving it late is rarely a higher rate. It is ending up with whoever is left.
Confirm the plan for a late return. If you travel out for the week, agree an extra night in advance in case flights or traffic slip.
Step five: get the paperwork ready
Louisville requires a license for all dogs and cats over four months of age, and a valid rabies certificate is required to complete it, according to the city's pet licensing portal. Keep the tag on the collar and leave a copy of the rabies certificate with your sitter.
The rest of the year has its own peaks. Thanksgiving week and the stretch from Christmas to New Year are when multi-night boarding sells out first, and summer brings vacation season plus humid days that limit midday walks. The holiday pet sitting guide covers the winter weeks.
Boarding or a sitter at home
Boarding at $35 to $62 is the better value for a social dog. A house sitter at $50 to $100 keeps an older or anxious dog at home, away from Derby traffic and a house full of guests. Browse dog boarding in Louisville, and see the true cost of pet sitting in Louisville for the full city ledger.
