Northwest: the Pearl District and Nob Hill
The priciest part of the city for boarding. Pearl District sitters list at $55 to $82 a night, mostly in lofts and condos, and most take small to mid-size dogs. Nob Hill runs $52 to $78, and the draw is the walk: Forest Park trailheads are close, so a Nob Hill sitter can give an active dog a proper woodland walk rather than a lap of the block.
Close-in east side: Hawthorne, Division, Alberta, Laurelhurst, Irvington
The middle of the market. Hawthorne and Division sitters run $48 to $72 a night, Alberta Arts $48 to $70, and Laurelhurst and Irvington $48 to $70. Most homes here are bungalows and craftsman houses with yards, and the streets are full of dogs. This is where most Portland owners find a sitter close to home, which matters more than a few dollars if you want midday walks.
Further out: Sellwood, St. Johns, Montavilla
Better value and more yards. Sellwood sits at $45 to $68 a night with single-family homes and fenced yards that suit large dogs. St. Johns and Montavilla run $45 to $65. A big, energetic dog is usually happier, and cheaper to board, out here than in a Pearl District loft.
Five nights at the coast, priced out
Summer is Portland's travel season, when dry weather pulls people to the coast and the mountains. Say you are gone five nights and your dog boards with a sitter. The middle row uses $63 a night, the Portland median in Petme's own rate example for Hawthorne.
| Where the rate comes from | Sitter total (5 nights) | Typical platform fee, 11% to 15% | Total on a typical platform | Total on Petme |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| $45 (Sellwood, St. Johns, Montavilla) | $225 | $24.75 - $33.75 | $249.75 - $258.75 | $225 |
| $63 (Hawthorne median) | $315 | $34.65 - $47.25 | $349.65 - $362.25 | $315 |
| $82 (top of the Pearl) | $410 | $45.10 - $61.50 | $455.10 - $471.50 | $410 |
A house sitter for the same five nights costs $250 to $500 on the national band, and a typical platform's fee would add $27.50 to $75. On Petme the owner booking fee is 0%, so the sitter's total is the bill, and Petme credits cashback after a completed booking.
What else changes a Portland booking
Licensing comes with the rabies shot. Multnomah County Animal Services says licensing and rabies vaccination "go hand in hand by design in Oregon", and a license needs a current rabies vaccination certificate, on its licensing information page. Keep the tag on the collar and a copy of the certificate in your sitter's notes.
The rain decides the walk for half the year. From fall through spring, a good Portland walker plans for wet days: shorter outdoor time in a downpour, a towel at the door, and indoor play so the dog still gets tired. Ask how they handle a week of steady rain before you book a regular slot.
Winter can turn icy. A rare snow or ice storm between December and February can make roads difficult on short notice. If you travel then, agree with your sitter what happens if you cannot get home on the day you planned.
The busy windows are summer, Thanksgiving week and late December, when owners travel to family. Sitters book out early in all three, and the holiday pet sitting guide covers when to book.
Boarding or a sitter at home
Boarding at $45 to $82 a night suits a social dog. A house sitter keeps an older or anxious dog in its own home and routine. In much of Portland the two cost about the same per night, so decide on the dog rather than the price. Browse dog boarding in Portland or house sitting in Portland.
