Summer heat sets the walk schedule. Montgomery Field, west of town, averages an August high of 82.0 degrees, and El Cajon to the east averages 88.6. Lindbergh Field on the coast averages 77.3 that month. From July through September, walks go out early. Winter swaps heat for rain, with 9.14 of the 11.96 yearly inches at NOAA's La Mesa gauge falling December through March.
Weekday commuters set the rhythm. Orange Line trains stop at Spring Street, La Mesa Boulevard, Grossmont and Amaya Drive, and the Green Line shares the last two. Owners leave by train, and the midday walk fills the gap. La Mesa-Spring Valley schools close October 5 to 16 and December 21 to January 4, and walks thin while families are home.
Grossmont and La Mesa Village hold the apartment clusters beside the trolley. The General Plan puts over half of La Mesa's housing units in multi-family blocks near major streets. Those short loops fill a weekday book. Serramar is the other end, 228 large single-family houses with a 50-acre open-space preserve.
Owners here mostly keep French Bulldog, Golden Retriever, Labrador Retriever, Bulldog. Knowing how those breeds behave, and saying so on your profile, is what turns a first booking into a repeat client.
Municipal Code 8.04.130 keeps a dog leashed whenever it leaves home, and the city applies it in parks outside the dog runs. Section 8.04.010 caps the leash at ten feet, held by someone in control. Section 9.08.115 bars animals from city athletic fields, including the Junior Seau Sports Complex at La Mesita Park. Section 8.04.320 requires the walker to pick up at once.
You meet the owner and the dog, agree the pickup time and the route, and check the harness, the leash and whether the dog pulls or reacts to other dogs. In La Mesa that meet-and-greet is where most repeat clients are won.
Leash on, waste bagged, water offered on longer loops, and a check of the pavement before you head out on a hot afternoon. Owners want to know the dog was walked, not driven around a parking lot for twenty minutes.
Paws wiped, water topped up, the dog settled inside and the door locked as you found it. Then a photo and a line about how it went. That message is what turns one booking into a standing weekly slot.

California has no license for pet sitters or dog walkers. La Mesa Municipal Code 8.04.130 bars a dog at large off a leash, and 8.04.010 caps a leash at ten feet. Zoning section 24.05.020(D) allows five adult dogs per single-family home and two per multi-family unit. It also bars boarding or keeping animals for others. Under Municipal Code 6.04.050, a self-employed sitter working in La Mesa needs a city business license. Pet-care income is self-employment, filed on Schedule C.
Owners read profiles the way they read reviews of a daycare. Four things get you the first booking.
A profile that says which La Mesa neighborhoods you cover beats one that says "anywhere". Owners search for someone close, and a short travel time is what makes a recurring walk work.
Owners want the same walker at the same time each day. Say which weekday windows you can hold, and you will be chosen over a walker with a wider but vaguer calendar.
Which breeds you have walked, whether you are fine with a strong puller or a reactive dog, and what you do when one dog will not walk. Specifics win. So does a photo of you with a dog.
