A local edge

Local know-how pays off in Aurora

Aurora sits above 5,400 feet on the high plains and is dry and sunny, with roughly 245 sunny days and only about 16 inches of rain a year. July highs run near 89°F while January nights can drop toward 17°F, and the metro averages close to 55 inches of snow across the winter. Walkers plan midday routes in July heat, keep water on hand at Aurora Reservoir, and shorten winter outings when the plains wind cuts the feels-like temperature.

When demand peaks

Summer travel from June through August is the busiest stretch for boarding and daycare as families leave town for the mountains. Ski-season weekend getaways from December through March drive short-notice drop-in and walking requests, and the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus and its hospitals keep steady weekday demand from staff on long or rotating shifts.

Know your Aurora pickup areas

Most daycare bookings cluster Original Aurora to Southlands. Owners drop off on the way to work and collect afterwards, so an easy run to your door matters more than how far you are willing to travel.

Owners here mostly keep Labrador Retriever, German Shepherd, Golden Retriever, Australian Shepherd. Knowing how those breeds behave, and saying so on your profile, is what turns a first booking into a repeat client.

Bilingual owners book faster

Aurora is one of Colorado's most diverse cities, with a large Spanish-speaking community and many refugee and immigrant households, so bilingual walkers who can communicate in Spanish reach a wider set of pet parents.

Section 146-3.3.6.J does not permit a Aurora home to take in other people's dogs for the day on a paid basis. You work at the owner's home in Aurora: walks, drop-ins, and staying over. Aurora also caps animals at one address at 4, and your own pets count toward it. Colorado does not license individual dog walkers or drop-in pet sitters; the state's PACFA rules mainly cover home boarding of three or more dogs, breeding, and pet transport, so most walkers fall outside them. Day hosting or boarding several dogs at your home can bring you inside PACFA, so check before you offer it. Anyone doing business in Aurora must register for a City of Aurora business license, which sets up the required sales and use tax roles. Aurora's leash law (City Code 14-5) requires any dog off its owner's property to be on a leash no longer than 10 feet held by someone able to control it, except inside a dedicated off-leash dog park. Pet-care earnings are self-employment income, reported on Schedule C against the platform's 1099.
