Walking a dog in Plovdiv

Plovdiv walks differently from the rest of Bulgaria. The city is built around a set of syenite hills, the tepeta, which rise straight out of residential streets and give short, steep, shaded climbs a few minutes from a front door. The Maritsa river cuts the city east to west with long flat paths on both banks, which is the better option for older dogs and for the hottest months. Plovdiv summers are among the hottest in the country, so shade and timing matter more here than anywhere else on this list.

The rules, and the seasons

Under Plovdiv Municipality's environmental protection ordinance (Наредба за опазване на околната среда), a dog in a public place must be led on a short, non-extensible leash, and aggressive dogs and dogs of large breeds must also wear a muzzle. Dogs may pass through city parks and gardens that are not closed to them by an order of the district mayor, including Mladezhki Hill, the Hill of the Liberators and Danov Hill, subject to the leash and muzzle requirements. Dogs are barred from kindergarten, nursery and school yards, hospital grounds, and designated children's and sports playgrounds. Separately, each district publishes a list of designated places for free dog walking, some fenced and equipped, some open terrain. The leash and muzzle wording is as reported when the municipality consulted on its updated ordinance, so check the current text with the municipality before relying on it. Source.
