Where to walk your dog in Sofia
Sofia is unusual among European capitals: a 2,290 m mountain sits at the edge of the city, and three large parks cover the centre and south. This is where dogs actually get walked, and what the rules are.
Walking a dog in Sofia
Sofia gives a dog owner more space than most capitals. Borisova Gradina runs from the centre to the south of the city, Yuzhen Park and Zapaden Park cover the southern and western districts, and Vitosha Nature Park begins where the last neighbourhoods end, which puts real forest trails inside a 30-minute drive of the centre. The practical trade-off is altitude and season: the city sits at roughly 550 m, winters bring snow and salted pavements, and summer afternoons in the built-up districts get hot enough that most walking shifts to early morning and evening.
Dog parks and walking spots in Sofia
Named places, with what is actually known about fencing and off-leash access. Where a rule is not published, it says so rather than guessing.
Borisova Gradina
Борисова градина, Sredets
Sofia's oldest park, running south-east from the city centre. A published list of Sofia's designated dog-walking places records two alleys inside it for the Sredets district: the alley parallel to bul. Dragan Tsankov and the alley parallel to bul. Tsarigradsko Shose. The park itself extends beyond Sredets into neighbouring districts.
Yuzhen Park (South Park)
Южен парк, Triaditsa
Park south of the centre, divided into numbered sections. A published list of Sofia's designated dog-walking places records, for the Triaditsa district, Yuzhen Park Part II and the "dog alley" (кучешката алея) in Part III.
Zapaden Park (West Park)
Западен парк, Ilinden / Krasna Polyana
Sofia's second-largest park, about 2.16 km2, lying mostly in the Ilinden district and extending into Krasna Polyana. During the Sofia Municipality restoration project a dog area and a separate dog-training area were built (construction announced September 2020). A published list of designated dog-walking places records, for Ilinden, the north-western alley parallel to the Suhodolska river.
Severen Park (North Park)
Северен парк, Nadezhda
A 0.78 km2 park in northern Sofia bordered by the Svoboda, Nadezhda and Vrabnitsa housing estates. It has a dog-walking area, and it appears in a published list of Sofia's designated dog-walking places under the Vrabnitsa district.
Vitosha Nature Park
Природен парк „Витоша“
A nature park of 27,079 hectares on the mountain directly south of Sofia, with marked hiking routes. The park directorate has publicly called on visitors to walk dogs on a leash and with a muzzle, citing the Veterinary Medical Activities Act, so this is leashed hiking terrain rather than an off-leash area.

The rules, and the seasons
Under Sofia Municipality's ordinance on keeping pet dogs and cats, a dog must be led in public places always and obligatorily on a leash of up to 1.5 m, and a dog over 10 kg on a non-retractable leash of up to 1.5 m or with a muzzle (Art. 13). Walking dogs is prohibited in city parks and gardens that have not been designated for it by an order of the district mayor, and dogs may only pass through such parks while leashed (Art. 12). The leash and muzzle are not required inside the dog-walking places designated by the district mayor's order, which is why the designated alleys and dog areas matter. Source.
Sofia sits in a valley at roughly 500 to 700 m, which gives it a humid continental climate with real winters: the January daily mean is about -0.5°C and the city averages around 56 days with snow cover, so winter walks mean packed snow and ice underfoot. The same valley position limits air circulation, and winter temperature inversions trap smog over the city, which is worth factoring into long walks on still, cold days. Summers are warm but milder than Bulgaria's lowlands, with a July mean daily maximum near 27.8°C.
Dog parks in Sofia
- Are there dog parks in Sofia?
- Sofia does not have many fully fenced dog parks in the American sense. What it has instead is designated dog-walking places, set by an order of each district mayor, which is where the leash and muzzle requirement does not apply. A published list records specific alleys inside Borisova Gradina, Yuzhen Park and Zapaden Park, and Severen Park has its own dog-walking area.
- Do dogs have to be on a leash in Sofia parks?
- Yes, outside the designated dog-walking places. Sofia Municipality requires a dog in a public place to be on a leash of up to 1.5 m, and a dog over 10 kg on a non-retractable leash of up to 1.5 m or wearing a muzzle. Walking a dog in a park that has not been designated for it is prohibited, and a dog may only pass through such a park while leashed.
- Where can I let my dog off the leash in Sofia?
- Only inside a place the district mayor has designated for dog walking, because that is where the leash and muzzle requirement is lifted. Which exact alleys and areas are designated changes by district order, so check your own district before relying on it. We list the parks that appear in the published list rather than guessing at the status of individual sections.
- Can I take my dog up Vitosha?
- Yes, on a leash. Vitosha Nature Park covers 27,079 hectares directly south of Sofia and is laced with marked hiking routes, and the park directorate has publicly asked visitors to keep dogs leashed and muzzled, citing the Veterinary Medical Activities Act. Treat it as leashed hiking terrain rather than somewhere to let a dog run.
- Which Sofia park is best for a large, high-energy dog?
- Zapaden Park is the largest of the city parks on this list at about 2.16 km2, and it gained a dog area and a separate dog-training area during the municipality's restoration project. Severen Park at 0.78 km2 is the quieter option in the north of the city. For real distance, Vitosha is the only place with mountain-scale routes.
- What is winter dog walking like in Sofia?
- Cold and often icy. The city sits in a valley at roughly 500 to 700 m, the January daily mean is about -0.5°C, and there are around 56 days a year with snow cover, so pavements get packed snow and grit. The same valley traps winter temperature inversions and smog on still days, which is worth factoring into a long walk.
