Walking your dog in Varna, from the Sea Garden to the coast

Varna gives you something inland cities cannot: a long seafront and a historic garden running along it. What changes here is the season, because beach access for dogs is not the same in July as in November.

Walking a dog in Varna

Varna is a coastal city, and that shapes every dog walk in it. The Sea Garden runs along the shoreline as the largest and oldest public park on the Bulgarian coast, with shaded alleys that stay usable through the hottest part of the summer, and paths that connect down to the beach. The seasonal split is the thing to plan around: through the official summer season the beaches are managed for holidaymakers and dog access is restricted, while out of season the same stretches of sand are the best off-season dog walking in the country. Sea winds also make Varna noticeably cooler than Plovdiv or Sofia in August.

Sea Garden (Primorski Park)

Морска градина (Приморски парк)

Varna's seafront park, created from 1881 with the Czech park builder Anton Novak invited to lay it out. It covers roughly 820 decares and its grounds hold the aquarium, the zoo and the observatory.

Vazrazhdane Park

Парк „Възраждане“, Vazrazhdane housing estate, Mladost district

The newest park in Varna, in the Vazrazhdane housing estate, covering about 30 decares. It has walking paths and green areas planted with trees and ornamental shrubs, outdoor fitness equipment, children's and adults' playgrounds and an adjoining sports complex.

Asparuhovo Park

Парк „Аспарухово“, Asparuhovo

A park on the Asparuh rampart, which the city decided to create in October 1934 on what was then bare ground. Its alleys are asphalted and lined with benches, and it holds monuments to Khan Asparuh and an Asparuh-era warrior.

Golden Sands Nature Park

Природен парк „Златни пясъци“

The smallest of Bulgaria's eleven nature parks, about 13.2 sq km on the wooded slope 17 km northeast of Varna, running roughly 9.2 km long and 1.2 km wide. It has five marked walking routes.

The rules, and the seasons

Varna's Public Order Ordinance requires owners to walk a dog with a collar and lead, and large breeds over 10 kg and aggressive dogs with a muzzle (Art. 21(1)(3)). Owners must pick up their animal's waste and carry its veterinary passport and registration certificate when out with it (Art. 21(1)(4) and (5)). A dog without a collar and lead and not accompanied by its owner is treated as stray and can be taken to the municipal shelter (Art. 21(3)(1)). Dogs are not allowed on the grounds of schools, childcare and health facilities, neighbourhood children's and sports playgrounds, or the beach strips (Art. 22(2)). Source.

Dogs are barred from Varna's beach strips during the summer season, from 15 May to 1 October, so through the summer walking happens in the city's parks and green spaces rather than on the sand. Source.

Dog parks in Varna

Where can I walk a dog in Varna?
The Sea Garden is the main option, a seafront park of roughly 820 decares laid out from 1881 by the Czech park builder Anton Novak, with the aquarium, zoo and observatory inside its grounds. Away from the shore there is Vazrazhdane Park in the Mladost district, about 30 decares with paths, fitness equipment and playgrounds, and Asparuhovo Park across the bay.
Can dogs go on the beach in Varna?
Not during the season. Dogs are barred from Varna's beach strips from 15 May to 1 October, so through the summer walking happens in the city's parks and green spaces rather than on the sand. The municipal ordinance also bars dogs from the beach strips generally, alongside school, childcare and health facility grounds and neighbourhood playgrounds.
Do dogs have to be on a leash in Varna?
Yes. Varna's Public Order Ordinance requires an owner to walk a dog with a collar and lead, and large breeds over 10 kg and aggressive dogs to wear a muzzle. A dog without a collar and lead and not accompanied by its owner can be treated as stray and taken to the municipal shelter, so this is a rule worth taking seriously.
Do I need to carry anything when walking a dog in Varna?
Yes. Beyond picking up your animal's waste, the ordinance requires you to carry its veterinary passport and its registration certificate while you are out with it. That is an unusual requirement compared with most European cities and it is the one visitors most often do not expect.
Is there anywhere near Varna for a longer walk?
Golden Sands Nature Park, about 17 km north-east of the city. It is the smallest of Bulgaria's eleven nature parks at roughly 13.2 sq km, running about 9.2 km long and 1.2 km wide along the wooded slope, and it carries five marked walking routes. It is a different proposition from a city park if your dog needs distance.
Which Varna park suits an older or short-legged dog?
The Sea Garden. It runs flat along the seafront with wide made alleys and mature tree cover, which keeps it usable through the hottest part of the day better than open ground. Asparuhovo Park is the other easy option: its alleys are asphalted and lined with benches, so there are places to stop.
