Local know-how pays off in Ottawa
Ottawa sits below freezing for most of December through February, with January lows averaging -14.0 and average snow depth reaching 25 cm in February (1991-2020 normals). A cat visit in those months is also a furnace and pipe check. July highs of 26.7 turn the same visit into an air-conditioning check.
When demand peaks
March break runs March 15 to 19 in 2027 on the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board calendar, and those bookings land first. Elementary classes end June 25 and resume September 1, the long summer window. The school winter break, December 21 to January 1, fills the rest.
Know your Ottawa areas
Centretown and Sandy Hill put clients close enough that a sitter can do four visits without moving the car. Westboro and New Edinburgh are house-and-key work instead, with a lockbox at the door and a longer drive between them.
Cat homes in Ottawa
Ottawa has 407,255 occupied private dwellings and 41.7% are single-detached (2021 Census). Apartments and row houses fill Centretown and Sandy Hill. January nights average -14.0, so a cat visit includes a furnace check and a look at the water bowl.
Bilingual owners book faster
Expect booking messages in French anywhere in the city: 36.4% of Ottawa residents can hold a conversation in both English and French (2021 Census). Answer in the language the owner opens with, and keep the thread there.
What a cat sitting job in Ottawa actually involves
A cat job here runs one or two visits a day: food, water, litter, and ten minutes of play. Keys change hands at the first meeting, and apartment clients add a fob and a buzzer code. Between December and March, check that the furnace is running and that the balcony door has not been left open.
Keys and access
Most Ottawa owners hand over a spare key, a lockbox code or a smart-lock code at the meet-and-greet. Agree where the key lives and how you get in if the code fails, and confirm it before the owner leaves town.
The visit
Fresh food and water, the litter box scooped, a look at the cat and a few minutes of play or a brush. You note anything off, like a skipped meal or a hidden cat, so the owner hears it from you first.
The update
A photo and two lines in the app after every visit. Owners who cannot see their cat for a week live on those messages, and a sitter who sends them without being asked is the one they rebook.

Cat sitting bookings in Ottawa cluster around the March break and the summer weeks after classes end on June 25, when households leave keys for a week.
Ontario licenses no dog walkers or pet sitters. Ottawa's Animal Care and Control By-law 2003-77 requires annual dog registration (section 7) and a leash in public (section 11). Section 50 caps a dwelling at three dogs over 20 weeks. Zoning By-law 2008-250 section 127 governs home-based work. Pet-care income is self-employment income, reported on form T2125 with your T1 return. GST/HST registration is required once taxable revenue passes the CAD 30,000 small-supplier threshold in four consecutive quarters.

What Ottawa owners look for in a cat sitter
Cat owners book on trust more than on price. The profile details below are the ones they ask about.
Comfort with shy cats
Many cats hide from a stranger for the first visit. Owners want to hear that you will sit with the cat, not chase it, and that a hidden cat still gets fed and its box scooped.
Reliability, twice a day
A cat on medication or a diabetic cat needs visits at the same time every day. Say what your schedule can hold in Ottawa, and mention any medication experience, even with your own cat.
A tidy visit
Litter cleaned properly, nothing left out, doors and windows as you found them, and a message with a photo. Owners come home and look for those signs before they look at anything else.
