A local edge

Local know-how pays off in Athens

Athens has a humid subtropical climate with long, hot, sticky summers and short, mild winters. From June through September walkers head out early or after sunset to keep dogs off hot pavement and cut the risk of heat stress, and they watch flat-faced breeds like French Bulldogs closely on humid afternoons.

When demand peaks

Demand spikes on UGA football gamedays in the fall and around move-in and finals, when students and faculty need someone to cover dogs during long days on campus. Boarding leads over the winter holidays and spring break, while dog walking stays steady all year for desk-bound professionals near downtown.

Know your Athens areas

Most cat bookings cluster Five Points to Eastside. Owners book the sitter who can reach them quickly for a daily visit, so the areas you list matter more than the distance you are willing to travel.

Georgia does not require a state pet-sitter or dog-walker license. Working in Athens means getting an Athens-Clarke County Occupation Tax Certificate, which covers home-based businesses too. County code 4-1-2 requires a dog to be on a leash any time it is off the owner's property, so walkers keep dogs leashed on the greenway and in every park except the off-leash areas at Memorial Park and Sandy Creek. Pet-care income is self-employment income, reported on Schedule C against the platform's 1099.
