Komotini is built at the northern edge of the plain that carries its name, at about 45 metres above sea level. The Municipal Central Park sits at the heart of the town, and the park of Agia Paraskevi gives a second green space for daily walks.
For longer outings, the Nymfaia forest lies about 6 kilometres northeast of the town. Komotini is also home to the Democritus University of Thrace, founded in 1973, and the newer suburb of Nea Mosynoupoli has grown to the northwest of the centre.
