Kilkis sits on a wide plain, with woodland and the Agios Georgios hill to the north. The pine-covered hill of the Heroon, home to the Military Museum of the Balkan Wars, is about 1 kilometre from town and is one option for a walk.
Kilkis has a railway station on the Thessaloniki-Alexandroupoli line. Owners who travel for work or holidays can book boarding, house sitting or drop-in visits. Zoopazaro lies just south of the centre.
